What is our Next Alaska (v3)?

Updated 11/9/20

The Next Alaska 3.0 dialog is an invitation to Alaskans to start a conversation about creating our next economy, one that builds from our current but unsustainable economy, to create new opportunities to support our future civic and market economic activities. Unlike other conversations focused on our current problems and budget crisis, this conversation is about opportunities, solutions and new ventures; and how we respect and build on the past subsistence and extraction economies to create the Next Alaska.

  • What will be the focus of value creation in our next economy?
  • What will an Alaska look like that is as vibrant and healthy in its urban communities as in its rural villages?
  • What market economy will support the broader civic economy of Alaska and create opportunities for the generations to come?
  • What is the unique contribution we will make to sustainable global development?
  • How will the challenges, opportunities and values of the Last Frontier inspire people around the world?

Our future economy can not abandon supporting our current economic engine; however, our current state’s economy is not sustainable. Whether you are in favor of massive cuts, raiding our savings, or taxing the current economy; the paradox of high costs (direct and indirect carbon externalities) of energy and oil revenue has accelerated the maturing of our extraction economy and the need to build our Next Economy, 3.0.

For those who are here to maximize the return on investment of extraction activities, a discussion about our Next economy may have little interest and might be a threat. For those who call Alaska home, perhaps a place where you expect to be buried, and want this to be a sustainable and vibrant place for generations to come, the discussion is needed; now, as we prepare for another legislative session and decisions that will further undermine or invest in our future. The choice was ours at the ballot box last week, and the choice is ours to help create in the future.

  • Who could host discussions? An existing group?
  • What platform can be used or created for sustained synchronous and asynchronous engagement?
  • What questions would be attractive to progressive individuals, new thinking and collaborations?
